Sydney Fireworks Usher in the New Year
Saturday January 1, 2005
The traditional and massive fireworks display over Sydney Harbour was one of many pyrotechnic welcomes to the new year in Australia and New Zealand. The Sydney New Year's Eve fireworks came in two parts, one at 9pm and the other at midnight which lasted all of 15 minutes.
The occasion was turned into a massive fundraising project to aid the earthquake and tsunami victims in southeast Asia and in the nearer islands on the Indian Ocean.
A New Year's Eve minute's silence was observed as those about in the cities and towns paused to remember the tsunami victims.
Northern Queensland's regional centre, Townsville, abandoned the city's planned fireworks display and funneled resources to help the devastated Asian region.
