Serena Williams Wins Australian Open Women's Singles Final

Saturday January 29, 2005
American tennis player Serena Williams, seventh seed at the Australian Open, has won, 2-6, 6-3, 6-0, over first seed Lindsay Davenport to clinch the women's singles championship.

Davenport and Williams were in an all-American women's singles final at the Australian Open being held at Melbourne Park in the Victorian capital.

The women's singles final started at 1.30pm today, Australian eastern daylight saving time.

Williams looked to be in serious trouble in the first set with a reported rib injury and had to take an injury break at 4-1 down.

Davenport was appearing in her first grand slam final since she won the Australian Open in 2000.

Williams won the Australian Open in 2001 and 2003. She was sidelined by injury in 2002 and 2004.

To reach the final, Williams beat Russian Maria Sharapova, 2-6, 7-5, 8-6, in the women's semifinal while Davenport subdued French player Nathalie Dechy, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.

The men's singles final will be played out tomorrow at 7.30pm, January 30, Australian eastern daylight saving time, between Australian Lleyton Hewitt and Russian Marat Safin.
