Pope to Visit Sydney for World Youth Day
Monday August 22, 2005
Pope Benedict XVI will visit Australia in 2008 when Sydney hosts the world's biggest assembly of young Catholics, Australia's national newspaper The Australian reported today.
The Pope made the announcement last night at the end of his German tour in connection with World Youth Day held this year in Cologne.
"I am pleased to announce that the next World Youth Day will take place in Sydney, Australia, in 2008," the Pope was reported as saying to a cheering crowd of 800,000 people from 200 countries. A didgeridoo was played as the Pope prepared the final Eucharist. Mother church of Australian Catholicism is Sydney's St Mary's Cathedral.
Movie star Mel Gibson, who directed The Passion of the Christ was expected to be asked to re-enact the last hours of Jesus Christ by recreating the Stations of the Cross parade through Sydney's streets during the Sydney youth festival. It is doubtful this would happen.

If 600000 people descend on Sydney when the Pope visits, will our water supply dry up?????
How is the pope going to fit all the new converts into the same confession box or has he brought one with him.
how fast can the pope drive? TOOOOO FASSST
That was way too fast and everyone around me was very upset, they saw him for 3 seconds after waiting 2 hours???? they may have been running late but they was not acceptable and the many Catholics that are looking for a glimpse of new hope this was not it. Sadly
i was hopeful to regain my faith but was let wanting and even farther from catholic beliefs than before…
very sad
ja, I feel sorry for you that your cathoic faith is based on how many seconds/minutes you see the pope with your eyes. i think there is a lot more to faith then that
