Search for Shark Attack Victim Continues
... and Did You Know Box Jellyfish Take a Siesta?

Thursday August 25, 2005
The dangers of the sea have been in the news this week, as a search resumes today in South Australia for the remains of a man attacked by a shark off Adelaide's West Beach. In north Queensland, meanwhile, scientists discover that poisonous box jellyfish have adopted the traditional Spanish custom of taking an afternoon siesta.

The shark attack in South Australia occurred yesterday while the man, a 20-year-old from the University of Adelaide, was on a research trip several miles offshore.

This has been reported as the second fatal shark attack in the area in eight months.

Meanwhile, Diana Plater of ABC Science Online says new research shows box jellyfish sink to the bottom of the sea for a rest in the afternoon.

While scientists at James Cook University in Cairns say jellyfish are extremely active most of the day, marine biologist and PhD student Matthew Gordon is quoted as saying jellyfish "tilt their bodies down and rest on the bottom of the sea with their tentacles spread out" in the afternoon.
