Australian Open: Seeded Players Lose First Matches

No 9 seed Elena Dementieva (Russia) and No 10 seed and Wimbledon champion Venus Williams (US) were eliminated in the first round of the Australian Open which started today at Melbourne Park.

Dementieva lost to unseeded Julia Schruff (Germany), 5-7, 2-6.
Williams lost to unseeded Tzvetana Pironkova (Bulgaria), 6-2, 0-6, 7-9.
