Australia's top men's tennis player and No 3 seed Lleyton Hewitt bowed out of the Australian Open in the second round of the Grand Slam tournament in a drawn-out four-setter against unseeded Argentinian Juan Ignacio Chela. Hewitt lost to Chela, 4-6, 4-6, 7-6, 2-6, in a Melbourne Park match that lasted 3 hours 13 minutes at the Rod Laver Arena.

Mary Pierce loses to unseeded Czech
Women's No 5 seed and 2000 French Open champion Mary Pierce (France) has been eliminated in the second round of the Australian Open. Pierce lost to unseeded Czech player Iveta Benesova, 3-6, 5-7.
Remaining top seeded players
At the end of the fourth day of the Australian Open, eight of the top 10 seeds in the men's singles and seven of the top 10 in the women's singles remained in the competition.
The remaining top-seeded players are: Men: Roger Federer (Switzerland), Andy Roddick (USA), David Nalbandian (Argentina), Nikolay Davydenko (Russia), Guillermo Coria (Argentina), Ivan Ljubicic (Croatia), and Gaston Gaudio (Argentina).
