Australia Fills First Three Places in Women's 200m Medley

In the women's swimming event, the 200m individual medley, first, second and third places went to Australian swimmers Stephanie Rice, Brooke Hanson and Lara Carroll on the first day of competition in the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.
Rice won the event in a new Games record time of 2:12.90.
Three Australian flags were raised as the three Australian girls received their medals while the Australian national anthem, Advance Australia Fair, was played.
Track cycling gold
To Australia's swimming gold were added two more medals in track cycling, with Anna Meares placing first in the women's 500m time-trial and Ben Kersten winning the men's 1km time-trial.
In Anna Meares' event, her sister Kerrie, the 2002 Commonwealth champion, finished in third place.
New Zealand's first gold
New Zealand's first gold medal came in the men's 200m butterfly with New Zealand's Moss Burmester winning the swim event in the Games record time of 1:56.64. Second and third places went to Australia's Travis Nederpelt and Joshua Krough.
Burmester's supporters broke into a haka at the New Zealand win.
Medals tally At the end of the first day of competition, Australia was leading in the medals tally with 3 gold, 4 silver and 4 bronze medals, followed by Scotland with 2 gold and 1 bronze.
Aquatics venue
The Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre is the venue for aquatics, squash and table tennis. It’s located in Albert Park, about 3km south of the city centre.
The swimming events continue at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre until Tuesday, March 21.
Getting to the aquatics venue
Travel on public transport on the Metcard network is free on the day of your event — just keep your Games ticket with you at all times.
From Southern Cross Station catch tram route 112, then walk to venue (400m). From the south, catch tram route 96 to Wright St tram stop and walk (600m) to the venue.
There is no parking at this venue.
