Australia's Kerryn McCann Wins Women's Marathon

Australia's Kerryn McCann has won the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games women's marathon in 2:30.53, beating Kenya's Hellen Cherono Koskei in a closely contested race which saw the two frontrunnners abreast in equal time at several points. England's Elizabeth Yelling finished third.

It was McCann's second consecutive Commonwealth Games gold in the event.

Shooting

In the women's 10m air pistol pairs, Australia won gold as Aussies Dina Spandiyarova and Lalita Yauhleuskaya finished with a score of 770 over Malaysia's Josseline Lee Yean Cheah and Bibiana Pein Chin Ng with 758 points. England's Georgina Keikie and Julie Lyndall filled the third position with 750 points.

In the men's double trap pairs, Russell Mark and Craig Trembath won gold for Australia, its fifth in shooting, with 186 targets out of a possible 200. India (Vikram Bhatnagar and Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore) with 179 and England (Richard Faulds and Stevan Walton) with 169 were second and third respectively.

Swimming

Australia's Jessica Schipper beat fellow Aussie Libby Lenton for gold in the women's 100m butterfly final. Coming third was Canada's Audrey Lacroix. Schipper broke the Games rcord she had set earlier in the day.

Cycling

Australian Kate Mactier set a new Commonwealth Games record in the women's individual pursuit and won the gold medal ahead of champion and fellow Australian Katherin Bates. Finishing in third position was Emma Jones of England.

Medals tally

In the medals tally, Australia was leading with 28 gold, 22 silver and 21 bronze medals. In second position was England with 13 gold, 13 silver and 11 bronze. Third was India with 8 gold, 6 silver and 1 bronze.
