1-2-3 for Australia in 20km Walk
Monday March 20, 2006
Australians made a clean sweep of the 20km walk at the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games today.
Australians Jane Saville and Nathan Deakes, both Commonwealth defending champions, took the gold in the women's and men's events respectively.
The first three places in each event went to Australians.
Jane Saville retained her women's 20km walk title this morning, with sister Natalie running second and compatriot Cheryl Webb third.
In the men's event in the afternoon the first three places were filled by Aussies Deakes, Luke Adams and Jared Tallent.
Saville's win in the 20km walk recalled the heartbreaking turn of events at the Sydney 2000 Olympics when — as she was about to enter Olympic Stadium (now Telstra Stadium) ahead of all the other walkers — she was disqualified from the race.
Coming back with a vengeance, she won the Commonwealth gold medal in Manchester in 2002 for the 20km walk.
Previously, in 1998, she had won gold in the 10km walk in Kuala Lumpur.
Hammer throw
Australia’s Brooke Krueger has set a Commonwealth Games record to win the gold medal in the women’s hammer throw final.
Krueger threw the hammer 67.9 metres to break the record of 66.83m set by England’s Lorraine Shaw at the Manchester Games in 2002.
Taking silver and gold respectively were Canada’s Jennifer Joyce and former record holder Shaw.
EAD 100m
Australia’s Elizabeth McIntosh has won gold in the Women’s EAD 100m final, with compatriot Katrina Webb of Adelaide winning silver. In third place was Beverley Jones, of Wales.
In the Sydney 2000 Paralympics, McIntosh won three gold medals for the 100m, 200m and 400m.
Squash
Australia’s Natalie Grinham won the battle of the "squash sisters" when she defeated sister Rachael to win gold in the women’s singles squash final.
Taking bronze was New Zealand’s Shelley Kitchen.
