Swimming in Gold

Australia was swimming in gold on the fifth day of competition at the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.
100m breaststroke
In the 100m breaststroke final, Liesel Jones added another gold medal to her Games haul as she set a new Games record of 1:05.09 for the event, breaking her own previous record.
Fellow Aussie Jade Edmiston took the silver while Scotland’s Kirsty Balfour took the bronze.
50m freestyle
In the 50m freestyle final, Libby Lenton won in another 1-2-3 triumph for Australia.
Finishing second and third were compatriots Jofie Henry and Alice Mills.
50m backstroke
It was another 1-2-3 win in the women's 50m backstroke final with Sophie Edington finishing first, followed by Giaan Rooney, second, and Tayliah Zimmer, third.
200m backstroke
In the 200m backstroke final, Aussie Joanna Fargus won gold with the minor placings filled by England’s Melanie Marshall, second, and New Zealand’s Hannah McLean, third.
Freestyle relay
Australia won the 4x100 freestyle relay, with England second and Canada third.
Medals tally
In the medals tally Australia was first with 42 gold, 38 silver and 32 bronze medals. England was second with 18 gold, 21 silver and 15 bronze. India ws third with 12 gold, 8 silver and 3 bronze.
