The Men Have Their Turn

Australia's male swimmers had their turn at winning gold when the Aussies won the men's 4x100m medley relay at the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games. In second place was England, followed by Scotland, third.

In the Australian team were Michael Klim, Matt Welsh, Brenton Rickard and Eamon Sullivan.

The Australian men's Commonwealth Games swimming team had been handicapped by the absence of top Australian swimmers Ian Thorpe and Grant Hackett who were sidelined by injury or health reasons.

4x100m women's medley relay

In the women's swimming events, the Aussies continued their winning ways by coming first in the 4x100 medley relay final and in at least two other swimming events.

In the 4x100m medley relay team were Sophie Edington, Leisel Jones, Jessicah Schipper and Lisbeth Lenton.

In second and third places respectively were England and Canada.

200m women's butterfly final

Jessicah Schipper took gold in the 200m women's butterfly final, followed by compatriot Felicity Galvez, second, and England's Terri Dunning, third.

Individual women's medley

Australia's Stephanie rice won gold in the individual women's medley, followed by Rebecca Cooke of England, silver, and Aussie Jennifer Reilly, bronze.

Golden file

Other Australian gold medal winners on Day 6 of the competition included:

  • Nathan O'Neill in the men's 40km individual time trial, cycling
  • Oenone Wood in the women's 29km individual time trial, cycling
  • Damian Istria in the men's horizontal bar, gymnastics
  • Hollie Dykes in the gymnastics floor final
  • Lalita Yauhleuskaya in the 25m pistol final, shooting

    Medals tally

    Australia was leading in the medals tally with 53 gold, 47 silver and 41 bronze medals, followed by England with 21 gold, 25 silver and 20 bronze. India ws third with 14 gold, 9 silver and 4 bronze.
