400m Track Event Goes to Australia

John Steffensen of Australia has won the 400m track event, followed by Alleyne Francique of Grenada, second, and Jermaine Gonzales of Jamaica. third, in the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.

Steffensen's win was the first time in the Commonwealth Games 400m event since Aussie Darren Clarke won gold in Auckland in 1990.

Synchronised 3m springboard

In the synchronised 3m springboard diving event, Australia's Chastine Cole and Marie Sharleen took gold, ahead of Canada, second, and England, third.

Synchronised 10m platform

Australia took gold and silver in the synchronised 10m platform diving event. The Australian winning pauirs were Chantelle Lee-Newbery and Loudy Tourky, first, and Alexandra Lindsay Croak and Melissa Paige Wu, second. In third position were Meachan Benfetto and Rosaline Filion.

Kiwi gold

Grame Ede of New Zealand won first place in shooting in the men's trap final, followed by David John Beattie of Northern Ireland, second, and Manavjit Singh Sandhu of India, third.

New Zealand's Valerie Vili won the women's shot put final with Vivian Chukwuemeka of Nigeria, second, and Cleopatra Borel-Brown of Trinidad, third.

Lawn bowls

Australia won the women's lawn bowls pairs with Scotland second and New Zealand third.

Medals tally

Australia was leading with 57 gold, 51 silver and 45 bronze medals, followed by England with 22 gold, 28 silver and 22 bronze. In third place was India with 16 gold, 11 silver and 7 bronze.
