Easter Racing Carnival Begins
at Sydney's Royal Randwick

Friday April 14, 2006
The Australian Jockey Club's four-day Easter Racing Carnival begins at Sydney's Royal Randwick Racecourse with the AJC Derby on Saturday, April 15, followed by the Doncaster on Monday, April 17, the Oaks on Wednesday, April 19, and the Sydney Cup on Saturday, April 22.

The AJC Derby is an Australian Group 1 thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds, at set weights, contested over 2400 metres (mile and a half), and with prizemoney of A$2 million. Like last week's Golden Slipper at Rosehill, the AJC Easter Carnival is a horseracing highlight of the Sydney Easter season.

Unless there are further scratchings, 13 of 14 horses (one, Congrats, has already been scratched) are lined up for the Derby, Race 6 on the day's racing program. Favorites for the race to be run at 3.05pm, Australian eastern standard time, are Headturner, Sepia, Primus, Spinney, De Beers and Dream Ballad.

The first race, the Fernhill Handicap, starts at 12.25pm. The last race, the Sapphire Stakes, is scheduled for a 5.10pm start.

Royal Randwick is the horse racing venue closest to the Sydney city centre with racecourse buses departing regularly from Central at Chalmers St during race days.

If driving take Anzac Pde, then Alison Rd, just south of Centennial Park. You won't miss it.
