Here Come The Whales
Sunday June 4, 2006
The start of the southern winter also marks the start of the whale migration season. From the cold waters of the Antarctic, whales start their journey to the warmer waters of the Australian coast. In Sydney, a good vantage point for whale watching is Cape Solander in Botany Bay National Park which should be less than an hour's drive from the heart of the city.
North of Sydney, in Port Stephens up the New South Wales coast, a mother humpback whale and her calf were seen frolicking close to shore, the Sydney Daily Telegraph reported yesterday.
Last season the National Parks and Wildlife Service counted 1352 humpbacks, 14 minkes, three false killer whales, and 15 melon head whales off the New South Wales coast.
