Since the New Zealand Rugby team, the All Blacks, unveiled their new haka last year with a throat-cutting gesture at the end, some opposing teams have claimed to be offended by it. When the new haka was first performed, the composer was quick to point out the gesture did not symbolise the slaughter of opponents but rather the cutting edge of sport.
The new haka, Kapa O Pango (Team in Black) came to the public's attention when it was performed before the Carisbrook test in Dunedin in August last year and in front of the South African squad. (The All Blacks won, 31-27.)
They say the new haka is not intended to replace Kamate Kamate but merely serves as an alternative haka.
