Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin Dies

Monday September 4, 2006
World-renowned Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin died today after being stung by a stingray while diving off Port Douglas in far north Queensland.

Star of the television series Crocodile Hunter and of the 2002 film Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course, Irwin was filming a documentary when he was attacked by the stingray around noon Australian eastern standard time, September 4.

Irwin was born in Victoria in 1962. He operated Australia Zoo on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.

Irwin is survived by his wife, Terri, and two children — Bindi Sue, 8, and Bob, 3.

Terri Irwin and the children were holidaying at Cradle Mountain, Tasmania, when Steve Irwin died. It is reported that Steve Irwin had not been in contact with his family for a week while he was filming the documentary off Port Douglas due to the absence of telecommunications signals reaching mobile phones in the area.

Trekking in the Tasmanian wilderness and out of range for a telephone call, Terri Irwin was able to get a text message — "The children send their love" — through on Father's Day, September 3, the day before Steve Irwin died. The Crocodile Hunter had not been able to speak with his children on Father's Day.

The bereaved family returned to Queensland as soon as they could.

We also just heard the news, and are shocked. Our condolences to the entire Irwin family as they try to deal with their loss. Hopefully, the fact that Steve’s passion for life was so easily transfered to anyone who watched him do what he loved, will help them. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.
