Efficient Wins Victoria Derby
Saturday November 4, 2006
Race favorite Efficient, a three-year-old gelding, stormed home from midfield to win the Victoria Derby followed by long-priced runners Gorky Park, second, and Teranaba, third.
New Zealand grey Efficient is trained by Graeme Rogerson and was ridden in the Derby by jockey Michael Rodd. It was Efficient's sixth start and his fifth successive win.
The Victoria Derby is the last major race of the Melbourne Racing Carnival before the running of the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday, November 7.
It was decided after the running of the Victoria Derby that Efficient would race in the Melbourne Cup with Craig Newitt as jockey, Rodd having been committed to riding Activation.
Efficient is the first Derby winner to run in the Cup since Arena, who finished 15th behind Jezabeel in 1998.
Five Group 1 races were scheduled for Victoria Derby Day, including the A$1,510,000 Victoria Derby (three-year-olds, set weights, 2500 metres) at 3pm, November 4, Australian eastern daylight saving time.
The other Group 1 races were the Ascot Vale Stakes (three-year-olds, set weights, 1200m) at 12.40pm, Myer Classic (weight for age, 1600m) at 2.10pm, McKinnon Stakes (weight for age, 2000m), Salinger Stakes (handicap, 1200m) at 4.30pm and Helvetica Stakes (handicap, 1400m) at 5.15pm.
Runners for Tuesday's Melbourne Cup were to be finalised at the end of Victoria Derby Day.
