Deadly Irukandji Jellyfish Halts Film Shoot

Friday March 30, 2007
The presence of the deadly Irukandji jellyfish in the waters of Hervey Bay in Queensland has stopped the filming of Fool's Gold starring Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey.

McConaughey and Hudson were filming the final scene of the adventure picture when a potentially fatal Irukandji jellyfish was found in the water, Sydney newspaper The Daily Telegraph reported today.

Two deaths in 2002

It had been believed that the Irukandji jellyfish did not stray further south than Gladstone, west of Heron Island and north of Hervey Bay and Noosa on the Sunshine Coast, in Queensland.

Two visitors to Australia were recorded as having died in 2002 when stung by the deadly jellyfish.

The treasure hunters

The Warner Bros Pictures comedy movie, Fool's Gold, directed by Andy Tennant (Hitch, Sweet Home Alabama), is being filmed in Australia and is scheduled for release early next year.

In the movie, McConaughey and Hudson play married treasure hunters whose eight-year search for booty leaves them broke. But just as they seem fated to divorce, they stumble upon a missing clue that might lead them to a fortune.
