Doing the Hook Turn in Melbourne

Monday April 16, 2007
Now why would you turn right from the leftmost lane? Apparently there are good reasons for it, but it can be quite frustrating for first-time visitors to Melbourne when, driving beside a tram line, they're suddenly confronted with a "hook turn" sign.

Believe me, I've been in Melbourne quite a number of times (the last time being earlier this month) and each time I'm still fazed by the hook turn requirement, often making me lose my turn, and getting lost as a result, particularly in a maze of one-way streets.

I must say some people really love it, or so they say.
