Maldivian Tipped to Win the Caulfield Cup
Friday October 19, 2007
One of the top events in Melbourne's Spring Racing Carnival, the Caulfield Cup, a 2400-metre Group 1 handicap race for horses three years old or more, is run on Caulfield Cup Day, October 20, Australian eastern standard time, at Caulfield Racecourse.
A strong favorite to win the race is the gelding Maldivian, owned by Perth-based Joe Ricciardo and trained by Mark Kavanagh, former jumps jockey from South Australia. Maldivian won last week's Yalumba Stakes run over 2000 metres at Caulfield carrying 59kg. He drops to 53kg in the Caulfield Cup which is a weight-for-age race over 2400 metres.
Other fancied runners are Eskimo Queen, Master O'Reilly, Scenic Shot and Maybe Better, all with fixed odds shorter than $10 on the New South Wales TAB online. Check on race day for the latest odds.
With prizemoney of A$2.5 million, the Caulfield Cup attracts some of the best horses in Australia and overseas not only for the prizemoney but because outstanding performance in the Caulfield Cup is a possible qualifier for a run in the Melbourne Cup.
A horse that wins both Caulfield and Melbourne Cups is said to win the "cups double." Recent cups double winners include Ethereal (2001) and Might and Power (1997). Nine races are scheduled for Caulfield Cup Day, with the first race taking place at 11.30am and the last race at 5.25pm. The Caulfield Cup is run at 4pm.
