Caulfield Cup Shock: Favorites Scratched at the Barrier

Saturday October 20, 2007
The 2007 Caulfield Cup race (October 20, 2007) was in turmoil after top favorites Maldivian and Eskimo Queen were scratched after an incident at the barrier just before the horses were to jump.

Maldivian and Eskimo Queen were the only Caulfield Cup runners with pre-race odds under $10. It's not immediately clear what happened at the barrier but apparently one or more of the horses reared and Maldivian was later seen to be bleeding around the ears.

Winning the Caulfield Cup was Master O'Reilly, a favorite for the Melbourne Cup, followed by Douro Valley, second, and Princess Coup, third.

Apparently Eskimo Queen reared, then Maldivian got scared – jumped up, came down and hit the barrier and got a cut in the neck.

Massive upset.
