... Romulus, My Father, the directorial debut of actor Richard Roxburgh from a screenplay by poet and playwright Nick Drake. The film stars Eric Bana as Romulus, father to the young Raimond Gaita (played in the film by Kodi Smit-McPhee).
Romulus, My Father joins a long list of Australian Film Institute best film awardees since the awards began in 1958.
Adding to the lustre of Romulus, My Father's win were the best actor award which went to Eric Bana and the young actor award which went to young Kodi-Smit McPhee.
Named best actress was Joan Chen for her role in The Home Song Stories, for which writer/director Tony Ayres won the best director and best original screenplay awards.
The night's three awards for The Home Song Stories were in addition to the five received at the Australian Film Institute Industry Awards.
