No Major Problems at Olympic Torch Relay in Canberra
Thursday April 24, 2008
Despite earlier concerns that the Beijing Olympic torch relay in Canberra could be marred by violence, the relay itself went very much unimpeded.
The torch relay was held in the morning of April 24, local time, with opening ceremonies at Reconciliation Place and closing events at Commonwealth Park on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin.
Demonstrators protesting the "violent suppression" of human rights in Tibet were outnumbered by China supporters waving large red flags who had converged in Canberra by bus from other Australian cities.
There were probably up to a dozen arrests — different numbers have been published — but, all in all, the Olympic torch relay was untroubled.
Earlier story.
