Caulfield Cup Pointer to Australia's Biggest Race

Saturday October 11, 2008
How the horses race in the Caulfield Cup on Saturday, October 18, could be a pointer to the running of the Melbourne Cup on November 4 and finding a winner.

The 2400m handicap race at Melbourne's Caulfield Racecourse has seen Ethereal win the Caulfield Cup in 2001 and the Melbourne Cup the same year. How the horses fare during the race with the potential to run the 3200 metres of the Melbourne Cup is a primary consideration in attempting to pick a Melbourne Cup winner.

Interestingly, Weekend Hussler — which failed in the Turnbull Stakes on October 4 and had been downgraded in Melbourne Cup betting four weeks before the big race on November 4 — is favorite in pre-race betting for the Caulfield Cup, followed closely by Turnbull Stakes winner Littorio.

Weekend Hussler remains at long odds for the Melbourne Cup.

Master O'Reilly, 2007 Caulfield Cup winner, is among the bettors' top choices in this year's Caulfield Cup.
