Irish Stayer Remains Melbourne Cup Favorite

Five-year-old Irish throughbred Septimus, winner of this year's 2816m Irish St Leger, remains short-odds favorite to win the $5.5-million 3200m Melbourne Cup on Tuesday, November 4.

Champion Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien has a possible three runners in the Melbourne Cup: Septimus, Honolulu and Alessandro Volta.

In pre-race fixed-odds all-in betting at Centrebet, Septimus today was at $4.50, Honolulu at $21 and Alessandro Volta at $51.

Caulfield Cup fourth-placer Mad Rush was No 2 in the Melbourne Cup betting at $6.50, followed by Caulfield Cup winner All the Good $10, Caulfield Cup second-placer Nom du Jeu $11, Profound Beauty $12, C'est la Guerre $15, Cox Plate and Turnbull Stakes place-getter Zipping $16, Bauer, Honolulu and Turnbull Stakes winner Littorio $21, and 2007 Caulfield Cup winner Master O'Reilly and Viewed $26.

Last year's Melbourne Cup winner Efficient has been scratched from Melbourne Cup contention.
