Sydney Hobart Yacht Race - All's Set for Boxing Day Start
Thursday December 25, 2008
At 1pm on Boxing Day, December 26, Australian eastern daylight saving time, 101 yachts of various sizes are expected to start the arduous 2008 Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.
This is a handicap race and the eventual handicap winner may not be among the leading yachts reaching the Derwent River finish line in Hobart, Tasmania.
But there is, of course, the glamour and excitement of being the first to reach Hobart and the winner of line honors is celebrated to an even greater degree.
For the past three years, the maxi yacht Wild Oats XI has taken line honors for an unprecendented three times in consecutive years.
The question is whether it will repeat this feat.
A live webcam of the race is expected to start at 12.30pm on Boxing Day on yahoo7.com.au/sport.
This year's Sydney Hobart fleet will have crews representing the USA, UK, New Zealand, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Russia and New Caledonia as well as every Australian state.
