Sydney Hobart Yacht Race - 14 Rescued from Sinking Boat as Super Maxi Duel Continues
Friday December 26, 2008
The 2008 Sydney Hobart Yacht, now entering its second day at sea, suffered its first casualty when the yacht Georgia, a Farr 53, lost its rudder before midnight, December 26, Australian eastern daylight saving time, and 14 crew members had to be rescued and transferred to another yacht, Telcoinabox Merit, which was nearest the stricken vessel.
At the time of the rescue the Georgia was on the verge of sinking and was likely to be lost at sea.
Telcoinabox Merit headed towards Batemans Bay on the New South Wales South Coast where the rescued crew members were to be transferred to a police launch, whereupon Telcoinabox Merit would continue on in the race.
Meanwhile, the two super maxis, Wild Oats XI and Skandia were having a duel as they raced down the coast, alternately heading off each other. Just after midnight, Skandia, skippered by Grant Wharington, was leading the hot favorite Wild Oats XI.
Wilds Oats XI is out to achieve its fourth consecutive line honors victory, except at the moment Skandia is in the way, figuratively speaking.
