Unearth the Past at Riversleigh: Fossils from 25 Million Years Ago

Twinned with the Naracoorte fossil mammal site some 2000 kilometres away in South Australia, Riversleigh in Outback Queensland has unearthed bones and teeth of extinct prehistoric animals such as huge flightless birds, marsupials and tiny bats.

The Riversleign fossil site lies north of the mining town of Mt Isa, some 905 kilometres by road from Townsville on the eastern Queensland coast. Visit the fossil site itself or immerse yourself in the displays, exhibits and information available at Mt Isa's Riversleigh Fossil Centre.

The fossil mammal sites of Naracoorte and Riversleigh are among Australia's World Heritage sites inscribed by the United Nations.
