At the start of play at the Australian Open on January 28, local time, half of the top 10 seeded players in men's and women's singles tennis had been eliminated from the competition.

In men's singles tennis:
  • No 3 seed Novak Djokovic (Serbia) lost to No 7 seed Andy Roddick (US)
  • No 4 seed Andy Murray (UK) lost to No 14 seed Fernando Verdasco (Spain)
  • No 8 seed Juan Martin Del Potro (Argentina) lost to No 2 seed Roger Federer (Switzerland)
  • No 9 seed James Blake (US) lost to No 5 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (France)
  • No 10 seed David Nalbandian (Argentina) lost to unseeded Yen-Hsun Lu (Chinese Taipei)
Remaining in the tournament are Rafael Nadal (1, Spain), Roger Federer (2, Switzerland), Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (5, France), Gilles Simon (6, France) and Andy Roddick (7, US).

In women's singles tennis:
  • No 1 seed Jelena Jankovic (Serbia) lost to No 16 seed Marion Bartoli (France)
  • No 5 seed Ana Ivanovic (Serbia) lost to No 29 seed Alisa Kleybanova (Russia)
  • No 6 seed Venus Williams (US) lost to unseeded Carla Suarez Navarro (Spain)
  • No 9 seed Agnieszka Radwanska (Poland) lost to unseeded Kateryna Bondarenko (Ukraine)
  • No 10 seed Nadia Petrova (Russia) lost to No 7 seed Vera Zvonareva (Russia)
Remaining in the tournament are Serena Williams (2, US), Dinara Safina (3, Russia), Elena Dementieva (4, Russia), Vera Zvonareva (7, Russia), and Svetlana Kuznetsova (8, Russia)
