Australian Open - It's a Williams-Safina Women's Singles Final

Thursday January 29, 2009
Leading women's singles seed (after No 1 seed Jelena Jankovic had been eliminated) and three-time Australian Open champion Serena Williams (US) knocked off No 4 seed Elena Dementieva (Russia) in the semi-final, 6-3, 6-4, in the afternoon of January 29, local time.

Williams was Australian Open women's singles champion in odd-numbered years 2003, 2005 and 2007.

Earlier in the day, No 3 seed Dinara Safina (Russia) defeated fellow Russian No 7 seed Zvonareva, 6-3, 7-6.

This has set the stage for a Serena Williams-Dinara Safina Australian Open women's singles final to be played on January 31 at Melbourne Park.
