The Devil You Say: What and Where Are the Devils Marbles?

Thursday February 5, 2009
They're said to be the devil's marbles. Officially, in accordance with Australia's geographical naming convention — where apostrophes in place names are dropped — they're the Devils Marbles, in the same way you learn of Mrs Macquaries Chair, Princes Highway, Kings Cross, to cite a few apostrophe-less examples.

Found in the Tennant Creek area of Australia's Northern Territory, the Devils Marbles are an extensive collection of huge round red-colored boulders said to be the eggs of the Rainbow Serpent in Aboriginal lore. Find out more about them and how to get to where they are. Photo: Two of the Devils Marbles balanced on their rocky perch © Tourism NT
