April 25 Is Anzac Day
Monday April 20, 2009
April 25 commemorates the landing at Gallipoli by soldiers of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps on April 25, 1915. From this was born the legend of the Anzacs and the birth, in the crucible of war, of the Anzac spirit.Gallipoli took a heavy toll in Australian and New Zealand lives in a war that was supposed to end all wars. Australian and New Zealand survivors withdrew from the Gallipoli peninsula in defeat, but the soldiers' bravery under impossible odds and the great spirit of mateship have become, in time, the stuff of legends.
