Winter Is Here

Monday June 1, 2009
We'd been having cool days and nights and now winter is officially here. There had been some really chilly nights when I'd shivered with the cold, and this was in late autumn in Sydney.

Now it's winter, so of course, it should — and will — be cold. Except for snow flurries and in the upper slopes, the snow hasn't quite fallen yet in the Snowy Mountains but you know it's coming, and the Snowy Mountains resorts are gearing up for the opening of the ski season on June 6, the first day of the Queen's Birthday long weekend.

For those who like escaping from the cold, there's always tropical northern Australia such as the holiday resort regions of the Queensland Gold Coast, Noosa and other points north. Photo: Cross-country skiing in Kosciuszko National Park © Australian Tourist Commission
