Ballarat: City with a Golden Past
It's Victoria's largest inland city and it's a city with a golden past, reaching population peaks in the gold rush of the 1850s. From its past as a booming mining town, Ballarat has reinvented itself into a popular tourist destination, particularly with the creation of Sovereign Hill in 1970 and the city's link to the historic events at the Eureka Stockade when miners fought for their rights under the flag of the Southern Cross.
Take a daytrip from Melbourne or stay a day or two in Ballarat.
