The Countdown Is on for the Melbourne Cup

Sunday October 11, 2009

With barely three weeks to go, Australia's biggest, richest and most popular horse race, the Melbourne Cup, is expected to draw the world's top thoroughbreds into the magic circle of 24 runners.

The Melbourne Cup, a Group 1 handicap race over 3200 metres, is run at 3pm, Australian eastern daylight saving time, on the first Tuesday in November at Melbourne's Flemington Racecourse. It has been run each year without fail since 1861. The 2008 Melbourne Cup, won by Viewed, was the 148th in an unbroken series.
