Aftermath of New Zealand Earthquake

Small tsunamis were generated by the earthquake which hit New Zealand yesterday, and a landslide closed off at least one road, the New Zealand Herald reported today.

The earthquake, 7.1 on the Richter scale, rocked Fiordland in New Zealand's South Island and was described as the biggest in 35 years. No injuries to people were reported. Frequent aftershocks were said to be likely for several days and smaller ones would continue for months.

The tremor was centred nearly 500 kilometres southwest of the South Island's main city of Christchurch and about 100 kilometres from the mountain resort of Queenstown.
