Shortly after the 1pm starting time of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, the super maxi Skandia was leading out of the heads and turning south toward the New South Wales South Coast. The Sydney to Hobart sea classic begins at Sydney Harbour at 1pm today, Boxing Day, Australian eastern daylight saving time. The race covers 630 nautical miles to Hobart on the southeastern end of Tasmania. Fifty-seven yachts of various sizes are competing in this year's yacht race, with the 98-footers Skandia (Australia) and Zana (New Zealand) favored to win line honors.
