Skandia Regains Lead

By mid-morning, December 27, Skandia had regained the lead in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, and was holding its lead by noontime, again closely followed by Zana, with Grundig AAPT relegated to third.

The 98-foot super maxi Skandia, sail number M10, is owned and skippered by Grant Wharington of the Mornington Yacht Club, Victoria. This is one of two 98-footers in the current Sydney to Hobart sea classic. It is carbon fibre from bow to stern and feaures a canting keel. Launched in October, Skandia won all four races in the JP Morgan regatta and all eight in the Rolex Trophy, major lead-up evens to the Sydney to Hobart.

Grundig Takes the Lead

Grundig AAPT was leading the super maxis Skandia and Zana just after 4am, December 27, off the New South Wales southern coast. Ichi Ban, which had spurted ahead for a while, had dropped back behind the leaders.

Grundig AAPT, sail number A99, is a 66-foot open type yacht owned and skippered by Sean Langman of the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club, New South Wales. It is a fast downwind yacht and carries a pared-down crew of eight, which is half the usual complement. Last year, it finished second to the 90-footer Alfa Romeo.
