For bushwalk enthusiasts there are a variety of Royal National Park walking tracks ranging from the easy to the challenging.

If new to the Royal National Park, a first stop should be to the visitor centre on your left a short distance after passing the Farnell Ave gate. There is a fee for entry to the park (A$10 per vehicle for a day’s visit, which is subject to change).

Ask for a map at the gate and other informational material which should usually be available.

If you didn’t get the material you wanted, then you should be able to get this at the Royal National Park visitor centre. Get a topographic map if you plan on taking the more challenging walks.

Walk to Bungoona Lookout

If you wanted to start easy, take the 30-minute Bungoona Walk from just adjacent to the visitor centre’s car parking area. Features of the area are explained in information tablets set up along the walkway. Note that this walkway was specially designed for wheelchair access.

The walk ends at the Bungoona Lookout with a bird’s-eye view of the Hacking River and the valley on either side of it.

But this is too easy.

Coastal two-day walk

You may prefer instead to take the full Royal National Park coastal walk from Bundeena south to Otford. While only 26 kilometres in distance, the walk is rated medium-hard and two days are suggested to complete it comfortably.

According to NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, the coastal walk covers variable terrain, including beaches and escarpments. A bushcamping permit is needed for an overnight stay.

Other walking tracks listed by the parks and wildlife service include:

  • Bundeena Rd to Marley, via Deer Pool. 6.5km, 3 hours return, medium. Start at the Marley carpark.

  • Curra Moors Loop Track. 10km round trip, 3 hours, medium. Start at Curra Moors picnic area.

  • Palm Jungle Loop Track. 10km round trip, 5 hours, hard. Burgh Ridge to Burning Palms Beach, Werrong Lookout and Cliff Track.

  • Werrong Beach Track. 2km return, hard. Starts at Otford Lookout. Short but extremely steep.

  • Forest Path Walking Track. 4.5km, 1.5 hours, easy-medium. Starts south of Boola Creek.

  • Uloola Track. 11km, medium. Starts around Waterfall station. Go past Uloola Falls to Audley.

  • Couranga Track. 5km, medium. East off the Uloola Track to Fosters Flat on the Hacking River.

  • Lady Carrington Drive Track. 10km each way, easy-medium. Unsealed historic route. Popular bicycle path and walking track.

  • Karloo Track. 5km, medium-hard. From Heathcote station to Uloola Falls via Karloo Pool.

  • Engadine Track, 5km, medium. From Engadine to Audley.

It is important to know the level of difficulty of each Royal National Park walking track so the appropriate walk may be enjoyed.
