Last year's Melbourne Cup was won by Makybe Diva, followed by Vinnie Roe and Zazzman. Makybe Diva was the first mare in Melbourne Cup history to win the Cup back to back.

Strong wind and rain lashed Melbourne's Flemington racecourse just before the start of Race 5 at 1.25pm on Melbourne Cup Day 2004. The track rating was changed from Good to Dead just before the running of the Melbourne Cup, and Slow before the following race.

The 2004 Melbourne Cup was run at 3.10pm, November 2.
