But you may wish to go further up Australia's Blue Mountains.

At Blaxland, take a detour to Lennox Bridge. It may not look like much but this was begun in 1832 by convicts and completed the following year. It’s Australia’s oldest mainland bridge and has certainly withstood the test the time.

Continuing up the Great Western Highway, don’t forget to stop at the Norman Lindsay Gallery and Museum at Faulconbridge, just after Springwood.

Movie encounter

If you saw the movie Sirens with Hugh Grant and Aussie actors Elle Macpherson, Kate Fischer and Portia di Rossi, that film was about a fictitious encounter between Lindsay and his models (who posed in the nude), and a visiting English clergyman and his wife.

The gallery has paintings and sculptures of voluptuous nudes as well as much material on writer/artist Norman Lindsay.

From there, just before Katoomba, take the fork that brings you to Leura where the shops hearken back, in architecture and mood, to colonial times.

If you can find your way there, the Leura Gardens may be worth a visit.
