Located close to the international date line you can -- figuratively speaking -- almost touch it, Gisborne lays claim to being the first major city in the world where every new day begins. With the sun shining an average of 2200 hours a year, it is also one of the sunniest places in New Zealand.
Sunny days and a good surf along the coastline make for a pleasant and enticing holiday for those who ride the waves. For those who dont, the white sand beaches and the waters of the South Pacific can be as much of a sirens call.
Add to these a land steeped in history with a wide range of activities and attractions, and Gisborne is definitely a destination to consider.
An hour away by air
On the East Coast of the North Island, Gisborne is an hour away by air from Auckland in the north and Wellington in the south.
If driving from either Auckland or Wellington, the trip could take the better part of a day and some sightseers could opt for leisurely travel in two or more stages.
Coach travel -- for those who prefer others to do the driving -- is available as well.
Within the city, buses are available weekdays until late afternoon, taxis are available most times, and if you havent yet rented a car -- a preferred way of getting around the region -- theres Hertz, Avis, Budget and Scotties among others.
