Australian Visa
ETA and eVisitor

By Larry Rivera, About.com

You will not need an Australian non-electronic "label" visa if you qualify for, and get, an electronic travel authority (ETA).

  • Update: From October 27, 2008, eligible passport holders from the European Union and other European ETA eligible countries should apply for an eVisitor instead of an ETA. The eVisitor is for travelers seeking to visit Australia for business or tourism purposes for up to three months.

These are the ETA countries whose citizens are or were eligible for an electronic travel authority:

  • Andorra
  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Brunei
  • Canada
  • Denmark
  • Finland
  • France
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Hong Kong SAR
  • Iceland
  • Ireland
  • Italy
  • Japan
  • Liechstentein
  • Luxembourg
  • Malaysia
  • Malta
  • Monaco
  • Netherlands
  • Norway
  • Portugal
  • Singapore
  • South Korea
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland
  • Taiwan
  • UK – British Citizen; UK – British National (overseas)
  • USA
  • The Vatican

(This list of countries was current as of November 21, 2004, and is subject to change.)

Holders of Taiwan passports can only be processed for an ETA if resident in and applying in Taiwan.

Holders of UK passports which indicate their nationality to be British National (overseas) cannot be processed for an ETA by a travel agent or airline outside Hong Kong.

ETAs are available for tourism and short stay business purposes. Tourist ETAs and short validity, single entry business ETAs are free of any Australian Government charge.

There is a charge for long validity multiple entry business ETAs.

  • Note: Australian entry requirements are subject to change and intending visitors should check with official Australian government offices for the latest information.
