First-time visitors to Australia may consider coming to Sydney first. This is Australia's premier port of call and there are a number of Sydney attractions you might want to visit.

Driving in Australia

If you plan to drive in Sydney and elsewhere in Australia, be sure to read up on some helpful advice.

First European settlement

Sydney has arisen from the first European settlement on the continent. It is the capital of New South Wales, and arguably Australia’s premier city.

Use Sydney as a base

Depending on your length of stay, you can either travel far and wide from a Sydney base or simply explore the nearer Sydney attractions within a day’s drive or so.

Do a walking tour

You can do a walking tour of "downtown" Sydney -- we don’t really use the term "downtown" -- and be able to discover a number of interesting Sydney attractions in the heart of the city in only a day or two.

Rocks and gardens

If you wanted to dawdle a bit, there’s always the Rocks district, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Darling Harbour, or a quiet time at St Mary’s Cathedral...
