An arbour of bougainvillea provides a one-kilometre walkway through the length of Brisbane's South Bank parklands. It is considered the defining symbol of the arts, entertainment and leisure precinct across the river from the city's central business district.
In 1988 this was the site of the World Expo. South Bank is said to be recognised internationally as one of the most successful redeveloped World Expo sites in the world and is used by other Expo cities as the benchmark for creating a premier destination.
Today, South Bank is in fact the one place in Brisbane where visitors can find many of the city's attractions in close proximity to one another.
Art and culture
For those interested in art, culture and entertainment, here is where you'll find the home of the Queensland Performing Arts Centre, Opera Queensland, Queensland Theatre Company, Queensland Art Gallery, State Library of Queensland, Queensland Museum, Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, and the Greater Union Hoyts South Bank Cinemas.
Add to this the parklands, rainforest walks, a man-made beach, restaurants, barbecue and picnic areas, and a venue for the city's major festivities, and you have a compact, accessible and attractive place to visit and enjoy.
Take a photo tour for a sampling of South Bank activities and attractions.
