How To See Brisbane in One Day

By , About.com Guide

To best see Brisbane in a day combine car travel with walking. Except in the heart of the city during work hours and busy weekends, parking is relatively easy to find.
Difficulty: Average
Time Required: 14 hours

Here's How:

  1. From the Brisbane city centre, cross Victoria Bridge to start your tour at the Queensland Cultural Centre.
  2. Visit the Queensland Art Gallery and the Queensland Museum.
  3. Cross Melbourne St to go to the Queensland Performing Arts Complex with its Lyric Theatre, Concert Hall and a small studio theatre.
  4. Proceed to the South Bank Visitor Information Centre just east of the Performing Arts Complex. Get maps and information here.
  5. Head back over Victoria Bridge and visit the Treasury Casino for some gaming or for lunch.
  6. Head east to visit Queensland’s Parliament House and the Old Government House.
  7. Cross the street to the Brisbane Botanic Gardens.
  8. If you have an interest in old colonial or historic buildings, look at your map and proceed to the Gothic-style Old St Stephen’s on Elizabeth St.
  9. From there, visit Brisbane City Hall between Ann and Adelaide Sts.
  10. Enjoy the Commissariat Stores on William St, and the Italian Renaissance building which now houses the National Bank on Queen St.
  11. Visit the Old Windmill and Observatory on Wickham St.
  12. If you have time for it, proceed to the Eagle St pier and take a cruise on the Brisbane River.
  13. Have dinner on the boat, if it's a dinner cruise, or pick a suitable restaurant in the city.

Tips:

  1. Parking's not so great a problem in Brisbane as in Sydney, so you can tour by car.
  2. Always have a map with you, not only for if you get lost but to find particular places.
  3. Have dinner early as a number of city restaurants start to close by 10pm.
