Cataract Gorge in Launceston, Tasmania, lies just west of the city centre and, depending on where you start, could be as close as a 10-minute walk.

With steep walls along the banks of the South Esk River as it enters the Tamar, the gorge has become a favorite place to visit for its walking tracks, picnic areas and, across First Basin, a chair lift which brings you into the Cliff Grounds Reserve west of the South Esk.

There's a restaurant and cafe at Cataract Gorge for a bite to eat or a spot of refreshment. You'll also find flocks of peacocks.

Aside from a brisk or leisurely tour on the walking tracks, or a swim in the pool, you can have a spot of simulated hang gliding at the Trevallyn Dam quarry.
