When it was completed in 2000, the new Melbourne Museum, with its distinctive soaring roofline and grand proportions, became the largest museum not only in Australia but in the whole southern hemisphere.

But it is not just the grand dimensions of Melbourne Museum which distinguish it.

Located at Carlton Gardens in the capital of Victoria, the Melbourne Museum sits among the greenery with its veritable treasures: from Australia’s Aboriginal heritage through the years of history to today's digital marvels.

Jewel in the crown

More than 20 different exhibitions are located in the various sections and galleries of the Melbourne Museum. Visit Bunjilaka the Aboriginal Centre; the Children's Museum Big Box; and the Australia, Te Pasifika, Forest, Science and Life, Mind and Body, and Evolution Galleries. All help show the depth and variety of the museum's focus.

The Melbourne Museum exhibitions range from dinosaurs to forest secrets to racing legend Phar Lap. There may also be traveling exhibitions in a number of galleries.

The museum is run by Museum Victoria whose collections comprise an estimated 16 million individual items in four museums at three locations, the jewel in the crown being the Melbourne Museum at Carlton Gardens.
