To best see Brisbane in a day combine car travel with walking. Except in the heart of the city during work hours and busy weekends, parking is relatively easy to find.
Difficulty Level: Average Time Required: 14 hours
Here's How:
- From the Brisbane city centre, cross Victoria Bridge to start your tour at the Queensland Cultural Centre.
- Visit the Queensland Art Gallery and the Queensland Museum.
- Cross Melbourne St to go to the Queensland Performing Arts Complex with its Lyric Theatre, Concert Hall and a small studio theatre.
- Proceed to the South Bank Visitor Information Centre just east of the Performing Arts Complex. Get maps and information here.
- Proceed to the adjacent Gondwana Rainforest Sanctuary which is a re-creation of a rainforest environment.
- Head back over Victoria Bridge and visit the Treasury Casino for some gaming or for lunch.
- Head east to visit Queenslands Parliament House and the Old Government House.
- Cross the street to the Brisbane Botanic Gardens.
- If you have an interest in old colonial or historic buildings, look at your map and proceed to the Gothic-style Old St Stephens on Elizabeth St.
- From there, visit Brisbane City Hall between Ann and Adelaide Sts.
- Enjoy the Commissariat Stores on William St, and the Italian Renaissance building which now houses the National Bank on Queen St.
- Visit the Old Windmill and Observatory on Wickham St.
- If you have time for it, proceed to the Eagle St pier and take a cruise on the Brisbane River.
- Have dinner on the boat, if it's a dinner cruise, or pick a suitable restaurant in the city.
- Parking's not so great a problem in Brisbane as in Sydney, so you can tour by car.
- Always have a map with you, not only for if you get lost but to find particular places.
- Have dinner early as a number of city restaurants start to close by 10pm.
