How to See Melbourne in One Day

The most practical way to see Melbourne, particularly its city and arts centres, is by combining tram rides with walking. Here's one guide to follow. Join the tour at any point. Take the tram or walk.

Difficulty Level: Average      Time Required: 14 hours

Here's How:
  1. Flinders St Station is a good place to start.
  2. Cross St Kilda Rd to St Paul’s Cathedral for a browse of the fine Gothic revivalist architectural detail.
  3. At the eastern end of Flinders St are the Treasury Gardens with the Treasury Building just up the road.
  4. Backtrack to the corner of Flinders and Spring Sts and turn north into Spring St.
  5. Visit the Parliament House just after Macarthur St and opposite Bourke St.
  6. In the Bourke St area are a number of cafes and restaurants where you may want to stop for morning tea.
  7. Proceed north and turn west into La Trobe St for the National Museum of Victoria and the State Library.
  8. The Old Royal Mint is a few blocks west close to Flagstaff Station which fronts the Flagstaff Gardens.
  9. Detour north to Victoria Market on Peel St for shopping or a guided tour.
  10. Return to La Trobe St and take the City Circle tram to the Spencer St Station.
  11. Walk east on Collins St until just beyond King St for a bird’s-eye view of the city from the Rialto Towers Observation Deck. Have lunch in the area.
  12. Cross the Yarra River south on St Kilda Rd to visit the Melbourne Concert Hall, Performing Arts Museum and the National Gallery of Australia.
  13. Walk through the Southgate Complex by the Yarra River east to Crown Casino.
  14. Have a flutter at the casino if desired.
  15. Have dinner at the casino or at one of the many restaurants along the riverside.
Tips:
  1. Basically follow the City Circle tram route. If on the tram, there should be announcements of interesting places to visit.
  2. There are a variety of restaurants and coffee shops around to break your tour.
  3. There is a fine city tram network for other places you may want to visit.
